30 June 2014--A few thoughts on the importance of string

Dear family,
It has been an eventful week!
On Tuesday we had a conference with Elder Ochoa (of the seventy, also of the Central America Presidency).
He talked a lot about faith and the importance of increasing our faith and helping others to do the same. He basically told us that Honduras desperately needs missionaries and that the only thing we can really do to help these people is to help them get baptized and then keep their covenants.
Hna Hill and I are trying to use the Book of Mormon more in our teaching and contacting, and I think it is helping. There was a time where the mission was short on copies of the Book of Mormon, and I think we got out of the habit of using it as much as we should, but we are now starting to talk about and loan a copy often from the first or second time we talk to them or teach them, often before we explain about Joseph Smith.
So you remember that yarn you put in my Christmas package just to be cute? I found a use for it this week. And, yes, string is always useful.  We took our new family to a member's house on Friday for a Noche de Hogar (FHE). We taught the lesson on the Restoration. We had already taught the family about prophets and priesthood authority, so we reviewed that and then moved on to talk about how the Lord established his church in ancient times--prophets, apostles, priesthood, and revelation. We tied a long stretch of string from a tree to a pole and then turned out the lights, it was dark outside, so the only light was my flashlight. We then asked several family members to follow the string--blindfolded--to reach the light. Easy. While the mom was walking we cut the string. And she got lost---the Great Apostasy. We then diced up the string. Part of it was lost (authority). Other parts (faith, hope, works, peace, etc.) were spread around to make other churches. Finally we taught about the first vision and how the Lord once again restored prophets, apostles, priesthood, and revelation. And then we restored a new length of string. We at least enjoyed ourselves, and I think it helped them.

On Sunday disaster struck. The family is planning to move out of our area. Still in the ward, but much farther from the church. They weren't even going to come to church Sunday, but (miracle!) they slipped in for the end of Sacrament meeting, but then left. We are hopefully going to have a family home evening with them tonight, and see what we can do to help them keep progressing. If you want to keep family Hernandez in your prayers, it wouldn't hurt.

Have a wonderful week!
Love,
Hermana Davis
